Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)

Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

After marrying the daughter of a doctor, Woodville went to Dusseldorf to study privately with genre artist Carl Ferdinand Sohn. While in Europe, he worked form sketches of America, shipping home his paintings where they did achieve some fame and appreciation. His work is rather drab in color and is said to appear aloof, as if laughing at his subject. The painting today is titled Waiting for the Stage. Five years after going to Germany, Woodville left his wife for a fellow student and fled to Paris, where he died of an accidental drug overdose at age 30.

Eugene Delacroix

Happy Birthday Eugene Delacroix!! French painter born in 1798, Delacroix was the major artist in the Romantic movement in France. His work was colorful and his subjects perhaps more exotic and literary than classical, but he was held in high regard by artists struggling to break free from the strict guidelines set forth by the Salon. He had a few pupils but did not teach as an avocation, concentrating instead on his own work and commentary on Parisian life. He traveled to America in the 1830, returning with a wealth of subject matter in new peoples, animals and ideas. The painting today is Christ on the Sea of Gallilee clinging on to the small craft amidst a turbulent sea.

Considered the first British contemporary painter, she was the first woman to be awarded the International Prize for painting at the Venice Biennale. She has compared her work to nature, "It (the eye) should feel caressed and soothed, experience frictions and ruptures, glide and drift...One moment there will be nothing to look at and the next second the canvas seems to refill, to be crowded with visual effects.”

He was a member of the Angry Penguins beginning in the 40's. I am including a painting from his series on Ned Kelly. Ludovico Carracci

Happy Birthday Ludovico Carracci!! Italian Baroque painter, born in 1555, Ludovico Carracci was a painter in Bologna. He was the oldest of two cousins who established the famed Bologonese Painting Academy. He taught his cousins Agostino and Annibale, who both went on to outshine his own painting. Their academy became the premier  training school for painting of the day. They encouraged their students to study nature and figure painting on a large scale. He continued to run it after the cousins left to travel and paint elsewhere. His work includes engravings, frescoes and altar pieces with wide gesturing figures and a soft light, some of which are still in existence today. The painting The Transfiguration, in the National Gallery of Art in Scotland, is a good example of his Baroque style. Note the handling of the fabric in simpler planes when compared to the same of Renaissance painters. Please be aware that the foreshortening of the prostrate figures of the disciples is quite complex. Foreshortening was first masteres by Michelangelo 100 years prior to Carracci.

Gustave Moreau

Happy Birthday Gustave Moreau!! French painter Gustave Moreau was born in 1826 and considered a symbolist. He painted subjects not many painters would attempt, such as the war between good and evil, the conflict of the sexes, the mysteries of life and death. He was not well liked by the art critics, but did mentor Matisse and Rouault in his later years. The painting I am showing here today is Young Girl Carrying the Head of Orpheus who according to legend, continues to “sing after his physical death". Orpheus, it is said, could compose music so beautiful it had the ability to charm man as well as beast, and (sadly) had his head torn off by a group of angered women. Moreau paints a devised ending to the story with the head, recovered, being contemplated by a young maiden.

He studied landscape and animal painting with Jean-Michel Diebolt. He ceased exhibiting for a time, working in solitude, and although in 1867 he made a come back with a show at the Salon, he continued to paint in isolation in his studio until his death in 1889. The peaceful setting painted here must be what Dupre was seeking in his solitude.

He painted this subject, The Peaceable Kingdom over one hundred times. In the painting, the animal forms are flat and the contours are clearly outlined with rich patterns adorning their coats, the children are cherubic and scaled small. He often backs the idea of peace with another group of figures in the background, such as Quakers, Native Americans, early settlers, etc.

He formed a group with 7 other artists, the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. Considered the first avant-garde movement in art, the brotherhood sought to reject the mechanical approach to art by Mannerist artists who followed Michelangelo and Raphael. They were fascinated with Medieval culture but also wanted to express themselves and closely observe and record Nature. Eventually the group split into two, one including Hunt and Millais focused  on realism and the other interested in Medieval depictions. The painting I am including today is titled Isabella and the Pot of Basil, after the poem by John Keats.

Charles Shannon, a white painter noticed his work and arranged a show in 1940. He continued to become more recognized and created an amazing amount of paintings, of which Charles Shannon had possession of 1200-1500 when Bill Traylor died in 1949.
