Happy Birthday Kano Tanyu!! Born in Japan in 1602, this painter was considered the most prominent painter of the Kano School. He was originally called Morinobu; Tanyu was his artist name. His father and grandfather were also painters. At age 15 he became an official painter for the Tokugawa Shogunate. He was commissioned to create many large-scale screens and panels on various landscape themes including tigers, birds, etc. Tanyu was also expert at monochromatic ink painting narrating the lives of shoguns and various figures from Japanese history.
