Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)

Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Ossip Zadkine

Happy Birthday Ossip Zadkine!! Russian Jewish sculptor, born in 1890, Zadkine was educated in London before moving to Paris. He was a member of the Cubist group, but African influences are also apparent in his work. His most well-known sculpture, The Desroyed City, is located in Rotterdam (The Netherlands), created in tribute after seeing first hand the destruction of the city by Germany in WWII. The devastated figure reaches to the Heavens in obvious pain.
