Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Bartolommeo Cristofori

Happy Birthday Bartolommeo Cristofori!! Italian piano maker, Cristofori was born in 1655. Although it has been speculated that he helped create various instruments such as the cello and the double bass but he has been credited with inventing the piano around 1700. It is said that after being appointed caretaker of the Florentine court's musical instruments he created the first pianoforte (piano). He continued to make revisions and improvements on his instrument. Three of his pianos still survive, one in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one in Rome and the last in Leipzig.
