Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Moreau le Jeune

Happy Birthday Jean-Michel Moreau le Jeune!! Born in Paris, France in 1741 and the son of a wigmaker, le Jeune was best known for his work on costume design. He studied with a painter and engraver but eventually discontinued his painting and concentrated almost solely on drawings for engravings. He also drew portraits using charcoal and chalk.
