Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Christian Selzer

Happy Birthday Christian Selzer!! Mennonite Pennsylvania German (sometimes known as Pennsylvania Dutch), born in 1749, Christian Selzer was a prominent cabinetmaker. Using walnut, oak, yellow pine, and tulipwood, he created what became known as the Jonestown school of decorated furniture. He was known for his painted blanket chests among other pieces.
