Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Abott Thayer

Happy Birthday Abbott Thayer!! American painter, born in 1849 and studied in Paris. He was an expert at portraying idealized female forms. Called the “Father of Camouflage” Thayer experimented with coloration and countershading to create protection in nature. Although somewhat eccentric, he was quite a popular portrait painter and had many commissions.
