Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones

Happy Birthday Sir Edward Burne-Jones!! British artist, born in 1933, Burne-Jones was a painter, stained glass artist and he worked in a variety of crafts. He was a 1st Baronet and worked in the Pre-Raphaelite style. The Beguiling of Merlin was finished in 1877 and was commissioned by art collector Frederick Richards Leyland. The painting represents the infatuation of Merlin with the Lady of the Lake, showing Merlin tangled in a bush while Nimue reads from her spell book.
