Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Cristofano Allori

Happy Birthday Cristofano Allori!! Born in Florence in 1577, Allori was a portrait painter who first studied drawing, painting and anatomy with his father. He then worked in the studio of Gregorio Pagani nd developed a more naturalistic style. He was an artist extremely dedicated to detail, limiting the number finished works. His best known work is Judith (1613), depicting Judith with the head of Holofernes, for which he used his mistress as his model, even using his own features in the face of Holofernes.
