Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Frank Furness

Happy Birthday Frank Furness!! American Victorian architect, born in 1839, Furness trained with architect Richard Morris Hunt. He designed over 600 buildings, residential and civic, primarily for the Philadelphia area, in his career spanning over 45 years. His work includes ornate, decorative features set off with a strong design sense in a variety of building materials. Today I am including the Pennsylvania University Library (now called the Fisher Fine Arts Library).
