Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)

Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

John Ekels

Happy Birthday John Ekels!! This painter was born in Amsterdam in 1724, and known as John (or Jan) the Elder Ekels. He studied design, but also helped his father in his business. His son (also John) followed in his footsteps as a painter and trained with his father. It was tough finding information on this artist, but I was able to locate some city scenes, such as the one below titled The Westerhal Near the Westerkerk in Amsterdam. I love the peaceful calm that seems to envelope this street corner.
