Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Richard Avedon

Happy Birthday Richard Avedon!! Top of the line American portrait photographer, Richard Avedon was born today in 1923. A high school dropout, Avedon landed a job as a department store photographer after serving in the Merchant Marines. His reputation quickly grew and he began producing photographs for Harper's Bazaar and Vanity Fair. His work of celebrities became quite sought after, but he also did series of mental patients, carnival workers and working class Americans. Of course I must include his Janis Joplin (1969, Port Arthur Texas), one of my favorites.
