Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding

Happy Birthday Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding!! This English watercolorist was born in 1787, and known as Copley Fielding. He was a student of John Varley. His father was a painter as well, and it has been said their work was near indistinguishable. The influence of Turner is apparent. I fell in love with the stormy seascape, below, created in pencil and watercolor. Note the sections that have been scratched out to reveal the white paper, adding to the drama of the crashing waves.
