Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Charles Despiau

Happy Birthday Charles Despiau!! This French sculptor was born in 1874 and his father and grandfather were plasterers. He shows skill in drawing and Despiau attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, following his military service, after first failing the school's exam. He gained recognition and went on to become a sculptor in his own right, after working as a practitioner, or an assistant, for Rodin. His work was primarily portrait busts, exuding a “calm classicism”.
