Blossoming Almond Branch in a Glass (1888)
One of my favorite still life subjects of Van Gogh, the cut branch in a glass, I ran across this one with the book behind creating a complicated compositional element. Note also the use of complementary colors, red and green, creating a vibration in the painting.

Bartolomeo Pinelli

Happy Birthday Bartolomeo Pinelli!! The Italian designer was born in 1781and was known as one of the foremost Italian draftsman for his day. He studied in Rome and Bologna and preferred drawing to painting. He created a volume of etchings and illustrated books such as Don Quiote and Dante's Divine Comedy. His drawings are done as if by a visitor to Rome, of contemporary Roman life. He disdained historical scenes, wishing instead, to create a modern look at everyday life, including customs, architecture, landmarks, street signs, etc., adding authencity to his portrayal. The Game of the Ring (1825) is an etching exhibiting the style of Bartolomeo Pinelli.
